About 11 years ago I got a new sewing machine that could do more then the old one I had for years. With this new sewing machine I made some Christmas themed placemats which I gave away as presents. When I showed my Mom pictures of the placemats she asked me to make a quilt for her. She was living in a nursing home and needed a specific size to fit her bed there. I had always wanted to make a quilt but wasn't ready to take the plunge into the art of quilting until then. Once she gave me the measurements of the bed, I went to Ben Franklin Crafts to ask how much fabric I would need. She wanted roses on it so I found rose printed fabrics and cut out all the long stems and the blooms in the center bouquet to sew them all on individually. This type of piecing together cut out shapes into a collage has been one of my favorite ways to create a larger images on quilts.
